The Details, and What You Get

You can get your copy of the The Pebble and the Avalanche signed over the Internet.

Authors use three methods to sign a book: they sign the actual book; they sign a separate page that is "tipped" into the book by the publisher; or they sign a bookplate, which is then pasted into the front of the book.

Using Internet technology and digital signatures, it's now possible to distribute signed bookplates over the Internet — you can download a signed bookplate, print it, and place the bookplate in your copy of The Pebble and the Avalanche. The author uses a digital signature which appears as a pattern of light-colored squares on the bookplate. This digital signature is competely unique to each bookplate — there are over ten to the forty-eighth different combinations (that's 10 followed by 47 zeros). Unlike pen-and-ink signatures, the author's signature can be authenticated.

The author reviews each and every bookplate request, so you will have to wait for your bookplate. If the author approves your request, the bookplate is digitally signed and placed on the book's web site, where you can retrieve it. You'll receive a 4 inch by 5 inch high-resolution image (300 dpi, about 2MB) that can be printed, prefereably on photo paper, and placed into your copy of the book.

You can see a sample bookplate. (The current sample is lower resolution and a bit smaller to help save on network bandwidth.)
