Company Design: Disaggregate and Focus

Two interesting articles on company design — in particular, how to build a startup company that won't implode. First is the much-discussed article that emphasizes "narrow" design:

Focus on the smallest possible problem you could solve that would potentially be useful. Most companies start out trying to do too many things, which makes life difficult and turns you into a me-too. Focusing on a small niche has so many advantages...
Or, in other words, disaggregate your design to take full advantage of the consequent benefit of specialization.

The second article is about what happens when you don't disaggregate — and it's written from a confession by the same individual who wrote the first article! The top error:

"Trying to build too much"
Startup companies are fragile, and computers seduce people into trying to accomplish too much. Divide the overall solution into component parts and provide a solution for one of them; leverage the benefits of a proper company design; otherwise you'll be overwhelmed.
